This week’s Aberdonian is celebrating International Women’s Day which takes place on Monday March 8.

1973: Women protest in front of the Grill Bar, Aberdeen, on Union Street, trying to get access in the pub. The sign 'No Ladies' was snatched off the bar door and was passed triumphantly from one group of women to the other.
1981: One in three members of a trade union is a woman. Yet, as Chris Aldred points out, if you were told 500 trade unionists marched down Union Street today and were asked to describe a typical member - you'd probably think of them as all being male.
1982: Deborah Rolland, keeper of Museums at James Duns House, with the banner of the Aberdeen branch of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies from the early 1900s.
1987: Many years of devoted service to the Red Cross have been marked for three North-east women with the award of badges of Honour. Here after the ceremony at the Town and County Hall, Aberdeen, the three show their awards. They are (from left): Miss Helen Duncan, Carnegie Crescent, Aberdeen; Mrs Yvonne Morison, Mountblairy, Alvah, and Miss Jessie Grant, Cairncry Crescent, Aberdeen. 1978: Six very special women were awarded diplomas at this morning's graduation ceremony. Special - because they are qualified teachers already, working with physically and mentally-handicapped and maladjusted children. Special - because they are the first to receive the new Special Education Diploma from Aberdeen College of Education. They are (left to right) - Mrs Jean Brodie, of Monymusk; Mrs Ethel Cruickshank, Peterhead; Mrs Jean Argo, Aberdeen; Mrs Merle Morgan, Peterhead; Mrs Dot McCaskill and Mrs Maureen Dunne, both Aberdeen.
1981: Ninety-year-old Dr Mary Esslemont thanked an audience in Aberdeens Music Hall today for being present for this the most memorable day of my life.
Dr Mary had just been conferred the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen by Lord Provost Alexander C. Collie and the distinguished doctor was clearly moved by the tribute.

1988: Hello! Christmas Day baby Jade Marie seems to be looking at her mum, Mrs Susan Wedderburn, 1 Home Farm Cottages, Udny Green, with a questioning gaze, to the amusement of Sister Carol Edgar. Jade was born yesterday in Aberdeen's Fonthill Maternity Hospital.
