This week’s Aberdonian takes a look at the heroic work of the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).

These images shed a light on tireless work carried out by the service’s volunteers in the north-east.

1961: A warm smile and a hot meal for Mrs G. Erskine, when Mrs B. Crawley of the WRVS calls at the door. Also pictured is Stephen Gibb (3), a neighbour of Mrs Erskine's.

1984: Women's Royal Voluntary Service regional organiser Mrs Muriel Scanian (seated in car) is presented with the keys to the vehicle by Miss Norma Michie, president of Soroptimists International of Aberdeen at the WRVS Office last night. The van will be used for the Meals on Wheels service. The cost of the car was met from the proceeds of fund-raising activities by the 26 members of Aberdeen Soroptimists.

Aberdeen District Council leisure and recreation department hosted the first of the annual treats for the handicapped and senior citizens in Westburn Park Lounge yesterday, and compere Robbie Shepherd decided to play host in 1989.

1985: New Deer's meals on wheels service is not quite what you might expect. For the vehicle which delivers the piping hot dinners is wooden, has just two wheels and has to be pushed. In other words, it's a wheelbarrow. But the women of the local WRVS find the unusual mode of transport just right for their requirements.
