GALLERY: 14 snaps of the Lonach Gathering through the decades

A young girl takes a photo of the men at the Lonach gathering
1982 - Jenny Marsden, 5, of Strathdon, snaps a picture of the Lonach men during one of their stops for a dram.

The Lonach Highland Gathering and Games was founded in 1823 by Sir Charles Forbes and is held on the fourth Saturday of August every year.

The annual event, known as the friendliest games in Scotland, includes Highland dancing, heavy events, hill races, a march and a pipe band.

After two years of holding the gathering virtually during the pandemic, the 179th event was held in person this weekend. To celebrate the game’s return, we’ve collected 14 photos of the event through the years from our archives.

Do you recognise any of the familiar faces in any of these photos? Have you ever attended the Lonach Gathering? Please let us know in the comments.
