What better way to achieve these goals than cross country running?
With the World Cross Country Championships around the corner, now is a great time to look back at some memories of the sport in the north-east.
On the run-up to the championships, we scoured our archives for the best photos of cross country running from the region.

1981 – Aberdeen Amateur Athletic Club’s open cross-country meeting gets under way at Balgownie.
1989 – Primary 7 pupils of Kellands School, Inverurie prepare for the Gordon District Cross Country Championship at Haddo Country Park.
1987 – Peterhead cross country runners Leigh Forman, Margaret Baird and Lindsey Milne finished third, second and fourth respectively in the girls’ race at Drum.
1992 – The front runners in the Elrick Eightsome Relay race get off to a flying start in Kirkhill Forest.
1987 – Aberdeen’s Robin Sutherland (162) sets a hot pace from the start of the Banchory Amateur Athletic Club senior boys’ race which he won.
1992 – A host of top Scottish hill running and orienteering internationals descended upon the Elrick relay race at Aberdeen’s South Kirkhill Forest, Tyrebagger.
1991 – Members of various north-east athletics clubs show off their prizes.
1989 – The junior men, men and veterans start a four-and-a-half mile battle round Haddo House.
1987 – Start of the junior men, senior men and veterans race at Drum Castle.
1992 – Barry McAllister takes the seniorboys over the top in the Grampian schools’ cross country championships at Balgownie.
1989 – EE Goldsmith’s Round-the-Castle cross country race series lifts off at Crathes.
1988 – Aberdeen runners Erin Kerr (with umbrella) and Katy Snape get ready for the start of the minor girls race in the shadow of Crathes Castle.
1987 – Elgin’s Mick Flynn added fun to the Drum men’s race with a new line in head gear.
