Hillary Clinton’s campaign chief John Podesta has said the Democratic camp will make no further comment on the result of the election this morning.
Clinton supporters were told to go home and rest with Mr Podesta telling supporters in New York: “Let’s get these votes counted and let’s bring this home.
The announcement was met with loud boos on the floor as Donald Trump led Mrs Clinton by 244 electoral college votes to 215.
The Clinton camp had been expected to make a concession speech this morning.
Mr Trump meanwhile has billed his speech at the Hilton Midtown hotel as a “victory party”.
In a message on Twitter Mrs Clinton thanked her team for their efforts during the long and brutal election campaign.
“This team has so much to be proud of,” she said. “Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.”
