We asked members of the public what their view was after Prime Minister Theresa May called for a snap election in June.
Here is what they had to say:
“I am quite pleased about it because she has had so much criticism, but it will be interesting to see how other parties deal with it and it gives the British people the chance to decide who they want to handle Brexit – and how.”
Sybil Norrie, 68, retired teacher, Inverness
“I don’t think we need it. We are ‘electioned’ out in Scotland. I think she sees Labour being pretty weak and she is being opportunistic.”
Garry Nokes, 49, surveyor, Tarskavaig in Skye
“I think it’s the right thing to do because she has not been elected and does not have a mandate on Brexit, and it will give us an idea to the sorts of feelings in the country.”
John McMorran, 62, semi-retired health and safety advisor, Aviemore
“It’s not unexpected. I did not believe her when she said what she said the first time. I think it’s a very canny move on her part and poor Labour must be shaking in their boots.”
Iain Dick, 65, retired, Isle of Skye
“It probably is the right thing to do, after the Brexit result people are wanting a bit of stability in the government. I don’t think the Conservatives are in the strongest position, but Labour are in an even weaker one. She must be confident she is going to win.”
Cameron Hazzard, 19, Elgin, broadcasting student
“People are confused as to what is going on in the country, and Theresa May is unelected in the minds of the people. So I think this is a good time for a general election. But I also feel like she is trying to take the limelight away from the SNP and its plans for a second independence referendum.”
Mike Arbuthnot, 46, Elgin, support worker
“I think that, with everything going on, this is a good time to stabilise the country and bring people together. I definitely think this is the right thing to do. It will help people to make their minds up and move forward.”
Oonagh Neilson, 53, Keith, administrator
“I think it’s a good idea and it is the right time to do it. There are too many divided opinions in Westminster at the moment. We need to make a clear decision for Brexit and everyone needs to work together – the time is right now.”
Linda Blackhall, 55, retired, Westhill.
“I don’t know if it is the right thing to do, but I’m glad. I am hoping it will give us the opportunity to make our feelings known about Brexit and another Scottish independence referendum.”
Barbara Donegan, 63, retired, Westhill.
“I think it is the right thing to do. At the end of the day people will vote with their conscience. It doesn’t matter what time it is held.”
Wilson Balogun, 41, director, Westhill.
“I do think it’s a good thing. So many people are not in favour of Brexit, so another general election can only be a good thing.”
Kayleigh Eagar, 23 sales co-ordinator, Stonehaven.
“I think that it’s a good thing. She’s an unelected prime minister.”
Russell Davidson, 38, restaurant and bar general manager, Aberdeen
“Yes I guess. We will need someone other than her, as we have just come out the European Union. I think the country has just become a mess really.”
Megan Lawther, 19, student, Aberdeen
“It’s a good thing because there’s a lot opposition to Brexit, with lots voting in favour of remaining, a huge part of the country doesn’t want to leave the EU.”
Jamie Nix, 38, civil servant, Aberdeen
“I think it’s definitely a good thing. Theresa May was getting to make all these decisions and she wasn’t even voted in. She’s not my style of politics.”
Megan Archibald, 20, student, Aberdeen
“I don’t think this is a good idea at the moment. There is too much uncertainty in the country, this will play into the SNP’s hands. It boosts their cause for another independence referendum.”
