Nicola Sturgeon waved to onlookers as she arrived to a polling station in Glasgow this morning.
The First Minister, accompanied by her husband Peter Murrell, cast her ballot at Broomhouse Community Hall in Ms Sturgeon’s Glasgow Southside constituency.
The vote is expected to be a significant one with Labour potentially losing control of the city council after 40 years in charge, along with further sweeping changes nationwide.
Meanwhile in Aberdeen, a total of 72 polling places opened at 7am this morning as the city gets ready to elect 45 councillors.
Polls will close at 10pm tonight with the results of the count being collected electronically before being revealed some time tomorrow at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
