Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP Mr Blackford had asked the House to sit in private over “disrespect for the devolution settlement”. A bizarre row with the Speaker ensued, where Mr Blackford was told a vote would not be held until after PMQs. But Mr Blackford refused to take his seat, leading the Speaker to bar him from the House of Commons for the day. Mr Blackford then swept out of the chamber followed by all his MPs. Speaking outside, he said: “We have a responsibility to stand up for the rights of the people of Scotland and that is what we will be doing. “Normal customs will not apply. They have shown contempt to the Scottish Parliament and we will act in a manner befitting that. “The Scottish Government shared my views, what has happened here is outrageous.” The devolution row has been a running sore in relations between the UK and Scottish governments for months now. Holyrood has refused to give legislative consent to Westminster’s EU Withdrawal Bill, which has been labelled a power grab.
