The first anniversary of the trauma centre at Foresterhill in Aberdeen has been marked by a Holyrood motion congratulating those who campaigned to locate it in the north-east.
North East Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald placed it before colleagues to recognise the opening of the first Scottish Trauma Network major centre on October 1 last year.
It congratulates the hospital consultants, NHS staff and trade unions, Aberdeen Trades Union Council who fought to bring it to Aberdeen.
Mr Macdonald said: “The opening of the major trauma centre at Foresterhill was a major step towards improving the way that victims of traumatic injuries are treated in the north and north-east of Scotland, and provided certainty about the future of hospital care in the North East.
“The choice of Foresterhill as the first centre in the wider Scottish Trauma Network only happened thanks to a high profile public campaign, led by hospital consultants, NHS staff and their trade unions.
“I was delighted to be part of that successful campaign which forced a rethink on the way trauma care was to be provided in the region.
“Without that campaign, victims of trauma would have had to travel to the Central Belt for treatment.”
Mr Macdonald added: “The first year of the Aberdeen major trauma centre has been a great success and it is now leading the way for trauma care in Scotland.”
