More than 200 people have died after contracting coronavirus across the north and north-east of Scotland, new figures have revealed.

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) data show that up to April 26 there has been a total of 2,272 deaths registered in Scotland as a result of coronavirus, with 886 of these in care homes.

A regional breakdown of the figures show that of the 209 deaths recorded: 129 deaths were in Grampian, 72 in Highland, six in Shetland and two in Orkney.

There have been no deaths recorded in the Western Isles since the pandemic began.

Data by local authority also reveal there were 48 deaths in Aberdeen, 75 in Aberdeenshire and six in Moray.

The total number of deaths registered across the north and north-east has increased by 60 in the seven-day reporting period up to April 26, up from 149 the previous week.

The NRS figures include all cases where Covid-19 is mentioned in a person’s death certificate and are distinct from the daily figures produced by Health Protection Scotland (HPS), which have so far included only individuals who have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

Across Scotland, a total of 886 (36%) deaths registered up to April 19 related to care homes, while 1,188 (52%) were in hospitals and 197 (9%) were at home or non-institutional settings.

This method recorded 2,272 deaths in Scotland linked to Covid-19 as of April 26, compared to the 1,249 fatalities recorded by the HPS system at the time.
