New figures show there have been almost 1,500 people diagnosed with Covid-19 across the north and north-east since the pandemic began.

The latest update from the Scottish Government shows the total positive cases for the Grampian area has risen to 1102 – an increase of 24 in the past 24 hours.

There are currently 99 people in hospital in the north-east with confirmed coronavirus – and of those, 11 are in intensive care.

In the Highlands, there have been another two positive results since Monday – bringing the region’s total to 324.

There are six people with a confirmed diagnosis of the virus receiving hospital treatment in the north.

The islands have recorded no new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. Shetland’s total remains at 54, seven for Orkney and six cases in the Western Isles.

A total of 75,570 people in Scotland have been tested through NHS labs to date. Of these, 61,807 were confirmed negative and 13,763 were positive.

At the daily briefing today, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the country’s death toll has risen to 1,912 after 50 more deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours.

Ms Sturgeon also announced an extra £50 million to help the care sector tackle Covid-19.

She said the social care sector is “under immense pressure” as a result of Covid-19.

Ms Sturgeon said the Scottish Government is “working hard to support the sector in every way we can”, with increased testing in care homes and supplies of personal protective equipment.

Announcing the extra cash, she said this will “help meet extra costs in the care sector that have been incurred as a result of Covid-19”.

Money will go to all 32 of Scotland’s councils to cover both care homes and care at home services.
