Orkney has recorded another new case of coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

The total number of people who have contracted the virus on the island has now risen to eight according to new figures released by the Scottish Government.

The last case of Covid-19 was confirmed on April 25.

Increases were also recorded in the north-east of Scotland with totals in Grampian reaching 1,269 – a rise by 10 overnight.

However there were no changes reported in the Highlands, Shetland or the Western Isles, that have totals of 337, 54 and six respectively.

As of 2pm today, 111,085 people have been tested for the virus in Scotland through NHS labs. Of these 95,758 were confirmed negative and 15,327 were positive.

Last night 769 people remained in hospitals with 25 in intensive care and another 15 with suspected Covid-19 in intensive care.

The nation’s death toll has now reached 2,331.

Phase 1: Social distancing over the weekend

Nicola Sturgeon said she was “conscious” that this will be the first weekend where lockdown measures have been eased to the point where people in Scotland can meet those from another household.

The First Minister reiterated her calls to ensure that any meetings with other households adhere to social distancing guidelines, as well as ensuring that items such as cutlery and food are not shared and people do not enter homes that are not their own.

She also asked that people avoid crowds at parks and beauty spots across the country, urging people to go elsewhere if areas are busy.

Ms Sturgeon said the changes would improve the lives of Scots, but added that she was still “nervous” about the easing of measures.

She said: “I’m not trying to cramp anyone’s fun… but I am asking for you to do it responsibly.

“If you are in doubt about whether your plans are within the rules or not, err on the side of caution.

“However harsh these rules might feel right now, and I know that they do, abiding by them will never, ever be as harsh as grieving the loss of a loved one.”
