Just 76 overseas-based military personnel have reportedly registered to vote in the independence referendum in the north and north-east.
Labour’s Jim Murphy obtained the figures by asking Election Registration Officers across Scotland.
He called on the Scottish Government to “urgently” contact all servicemen and women based abroad to make sure they know they can vote.
The former Scottish secretary said 46 applications had been received from service personnel and spouses by the Grampian office, 28 in the Highlands and two in Shetland.
There were just 153 throughout Scotland, but Mr Murphy said more than 1,100 personnel from the Royal Scots Borderers and Highlanders are currently stationed outside the country.
Mr Murphy said: “Those who risk their lives for our safety must not be cut out of this referendum.
“But these figures reveal there is now a real danger that our service men and women might be denied the chance to have their say on the future of our country.”
