A trade body has highlighted five objectives it claims are key to maintaining safe, efficient and sustainable freight transportation throughout the UK.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has asked the Smith Commission, which is examining new powers for the Scottish Parliament, to carefully consider the impact of any proposals on supply chains and logistics activities.
It has urged politicians to avoid any action that would disrupt current economies of scale or borderless transport patterns.
In its submission to the commission, the organisation, which has 14,000 members who transport goods by air, road and sea, said there should be fair competition, value for money services for motoring services agencies and a consistent, fair and effective approach from safety regulators/agencies.
FTA also highlighted the importance of good transport infrastructure networks.
Margaret Simpson, of FTA Scotland, said: “We are delighted to have been asked to submit our thoughts to the Smith Commission.
“Within this we have identified five key objectives that we believe should be pursued in order that barriers and costs do not arise.
“We have described the potential risks and consequences for transport and logistics for each of these and have asked that the commission makes it an objective of their recommendations to avoid the emergence of these costs and distortions.
“This would maintain the benefits to Scotland and the rest of the UK of a single market in transport services.”
