The SNP leader will step down from his post after seven years, making him Scotland’s longest serving First Minister. Mr Salmond will be formally succeeded by Nicola Sturgeon when he leaves Bute House in Edinburgh next week. His resignation came shortly after the SNP lost the independence referendum in September. He is yet to decide if he will stand in the 2015 Westminster election or the 2016 Holyrood election. The SNP will hold its annual conference tomorrow.
