A number of UKIP supporters have gathered in Glasgow’s George Square today in an attempt to launch a ‘Union Day’, on the anniversary of the independence referendum.
The party says the day should be held as “a formal marking of the September 18, 2014 referendum’s democratic re-affirmation of the UK Union.”
However, most online reaction has come from a picture taken at the gathering showing chairman of UKIP Scotland, Arthur Misty Thackeray, holding a ‘Union Day’ sign and inadvertently standing in front of a ‘Refugees Welcome’ banner.
The large banner outside Glasgow City Hall which reads ‘Refugees Welcome’ was put up to show support for refugees from Syria.
The picture comes just one week after UKIP party leader Nigel Farage told the European commission that off-shore reception centres were needed to assess whether ‘migrants’ coming to Europe had legitimate claims or not.
Perhaps UKIP’s Scottish chairman has split from the main party line and believes the UK should welcome refugees with open arms?
UKIP changing stance on immigration or an inadvertent photograph?
