The co-convener of the Scottish Green’s has branded Donald Trump an “arrogant, racist bully” and urged Nicola Sturgeon to stop him investing in Prestwick Airport.
Last week, reports suggested that officials at publicly-owned terminal and executives of the Trump Organisation had explored working together.
Patrick Harvie said at Holyrood yesterday: “For many years it has been clear – to anybody who cared to take an interest – that Donald Trump is an arrogant and racist bully.
“It appears that Prestwick Airport is now pursuing an official partnership – a strategic alliance – with the Trump Organisation.
“Does the first minister agree that the owner – most especially a government that exists to serve the public interest – of any business must ensure that business cuts ties with such a dangerous extremist?”
Ms Sturgeon said: “I would probably use more diplomatic language, but I suspect that my views on Donald Trump are not materially different from Patrick Harvie’s.
“It is important to be very clear that there is no contractual relationship between Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Donald Trump or any of his organisations, including Trump Turnberry.”
Mr Trump owns the Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire and Trump International Golf Links, Scotland in Aberdeenshire and has invested heavily in both.
A spokeswoman for the New York-based businessman said: “Patrick Harvie’s offensive language is disgraceful and demonstrates his gross ignorance. The man is not fit for public office.”
