The Mountaineering Council of Scotland has written to the main political parties urging them to back their plan for the Scottish uplands.
The group want candidates from across the political spectrum to support their view that Scotland’s mountains should be “respected and safeguarded for the benefit of all”.
They are also demanding guaranteed planning protection for mountains and commitments to improving mountain safety.
Mike Watson, president of the council, explained: “We sent our election briefing, A Sustainable Future for Scotland’s Mountains to over 250 parliamentary candidates and sitting MSPs earlier this year, and our members are now keen to hear parties’ responses to our six priorities for political focus.”
The organisation plans to share these responses with its 13,000 members and other supporters from Scotland’s hill walking, climbing and mountaineering community to help inform individuals’ voting decisions.
