Theresa May tried her hand at a bit of Doric last night, joking she had heard Inverness was “dreich”.
The prime minister was speaking at a Scottish reception at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham.
It also emerged at the event that Ruth Davidson and her partner Jennifer Wilson call Mrs May “Big T” at home.
Revealing the nickname, the Scottish Tory leader added: “I hope you don’t mind prime minister, but both Jen and I are quite short so we look up to you in a very physical sense as well as a metaphorical one.”
Mrs May congratulated the Scottish Conservatives on their success in May’s Holyrood elections.
And she urged activists to keep the momentum going through to next year’s council elections, to give a “very clear message to the SNP”.
Talking about her various roles within the party, Mrs May said: “I have done everything so I know what it’s like.”
To laughs, she added: “Ruth just talked about Inverness and it being a bit dreich. Is that right up in Inverness?
“I have been out in the rain and the snow delivering leaflets and so forth.”
She said it was a really exciting time to be a Conservative, adding: “We are at a turning point in this country’s history and the future is in our hands.
“The decisions we make, how we deal with the negotiations for Brexit, will determine our future as a country.
“The public have given us a job to do and we are going to get on and do it.”
Reiterating the message of her earlier Brexit speech in the main hall, Mrs May said: “It is the UK that is negotiating to leave the EU, it is the UK that voted to leave the EU and it is the UK Government that has the task of conducting those negotiations.
“I’m absolutely clear and I will do everything, as your prime minister and as leader of this party, that I can to make sure that nobody has an opportunity to break up the precious union we have here in the UK.”
