New LSE figures showing Scotland is set to lose £30billion in the event of a no deal Brexit show leaving the EU would be a betrayal of the UK, Lord Bruce of Bennachie has told the House of Lords.
The Lib Dem peer, formerly MP for Gordon, asked if Brexit minister Baroness Anelay of St Johns was aware of the research.
He said: “My own city of Aberdeen could lose 7% of its economy over the next five years.
“Will the government now acknowledge that leaving the single market and the customs union cannot be a deal for the UK but one that betrays the UK and puts it at risk?”
Baroness Anelay said: “This government will never betray the United Kingdom and we will not betray the fact that, when the referendum was held, more than a million more people voted to leave than remain.
“We will continue negotiate a deal that is best for the whole of the UK.”
