Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has been reprimanded by Commons Speaker John Bercow for “sexist” comment.
Speaker Bercow accused Johnson of being “inappropriate and frankly sexist” after he referred to shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry as Lady Nugee, a reference to her marriage to High Court Judge Sir Christopher Nugee.
Johnson received a dressing down from Mr Bercow who said: “We do not address people by the titles of their spouses.
“The shadow foreign secretary has a name and it’s not lady something.
“We know what her name is and it is inappropriate and frankly sexist to speak in those terms and I’m not having it in this chamber.”
Mr Johnson has since apologised: “I heartily tender my apologies to (Emily Thornberry) if she was offended by what I said and I meant no harm, and I apologise unreservedly to her if I have offended the feelings of (Ms Thornberry).”
