After MPs unceremoniously dumped Theresa May’s deal, they will today have chance to debate and vote on pursing a no-deal Brexit.
How will that vote go?
There is no majority in the Commons for a no-deal Brexit, meaning this proposal will be soundly rejected.
What happens then?
Tomorrow, MPs will be given the chance to vote on whether the UK should seek to extend the Article 50 negotiating period.
So what happens if MPs back a delay?
Mrs May would head to Brussels to request an extension and, assuming the other member states all agreed, Brexit would be postponed. The prime minister says this should be for no longer than three months, but that very much depends on the EU.
If an extension is granted, what would that time be used for?
There are plenty of possible answers. Mrs May could seek to hold a further vote on her deal, but with two heavy defeats under her belt that’s not likely. The other option is to negotiate a completely new Brexit deal.
If neither of those options are possible, what then?
Further options could include holding a general election in attempt to change the parliamentary arithmetic or holding another referendum.
