A motion has been tabled at Westminster censuring Inverness MP Danny Alexander for his “irresponsible” campaign against A9 average speed cameras.
The statement, lodged by the SNP’s Pete Wishart, claims that the chief Treasury secretary should apologise to motorists and stop campaigning “to put them at risk again”.
Figures have showed that since the introduction of the cameras, speeding is down from one-in-three drivers on the A9, to one-in-20.
The early day motion (EDM) lodged in the UK Parliament by Mr Wishart, the MP for Perth and North Perthshire, calls on “those campaigning to have these cameras taken down to stop” in the wake of the findings.
It also states that it “looks forward” to Mr Alexander “accepting and acknowledging these impressive safety figures and apologising to the people of Perthshire and the Highlands for campaigning to put them at risk again”.
A spokesman for Mr Alexander said: “If Highlanders had a metre of A9 dualling for every SNP press release on the issue then we might be closer to completion. As it is, the SNP government hasn’t dualled an inch of the A9 after nearly eight years in power.
“After almost a week, Pete Wishart is still the only signatory to his politically motivated EDM.
“Mr Wishart should heed the words of the SNP’s own transport minister, who said a three year period is needed to evaluate road safety measures, before engaging in these pointless publicity stunts.”
