The biggest laugh of the budget went to George Osborne’s joke about Ed Miliband and his second kitchen.
The kitchen row began after Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine criticised Mr Miliband and his wife Justine Thornton’s kitchen after they held a photocall in it.
Times journalist Jenni Russell later revealed that the Milibands in fact had two kitchens in their house, leading to claims the Labour leader was out of touch with ordinary voters.
But Mr Miliband hit back today at Ms Vine, who is the wife of Chief Whip Michael Gove, appearing to suggest their kitchen was paid for on parliamentary expenses.
Turning to Mr Cameron, Mr Miliband said: “Somehow I thought you might mention kitchens, let me just say at least I paid for my kitchen unlike the Government Chief Whip.”
Mr Cameron this week revealed has also has two kitchens in his London home – the second was built for carers who looked after his disabled son Ivan, who died in 2009.
