Theresa May has today continued a raft of sweeping changes to her Cabinet after announcing that Michael Gove, Nicky Morgan and a host of key Tory figures will leave their posts.
Michael Gove was the first casualty of the day after it was revealed that the keen Brexit supporter and Mrs May’s one-time Tory leadership rival would not be continuing in his role as Justice Secretary.
Nicky Morgan has also been dropped from her role as Education Secretary. Ms May is a high-profile backer of grammar schools and the sacking could potentially signal a new policy direction for the party.
Taking to Twitter, Ms Morgan said she had been left “disappointed” by the decision.
Who has Theresa May named as the key members of her cabinet?
“Disappointed not to be continuing as Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities – two wonderful roles it’s been a privilege to hold,” she wrote.
Ms Morgan had backed Michael Gove in his bid to be prime minister and is understood to have clashed with Theresa May on a number of issues in the past.
Culture Secretary John Whittingdale is another top name who will not be carrying on in his position after announcing on twitter that he had been removed from the role.
“Has been a privilege to serve as Culture Secretary,” he wrote. “I wish my successor every success and will continue to support creative industries.”
Jeremy Hunt, who attracted the scorn of junior doctors in his role as Health Secretary will stay on despite being rumoured to move to a new role for most of the morning.
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Oliver Letwin, is also reportedly set to lose his job, while Liz Truss has moved to Justice Secretary.
Chris Grayling, known as Theresa May’s “right hand man” has been appointed as Transport Secretary.
