Caley Thistle are weighing up a move for former Dundee United defender Gavin Gunning after taking the Irishman on trial.
Inverness manager Richie Foran is looking to bring in up to four new faces following a difficult start to his tenure, which continued with Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 loss against Hearts at Tynecastle.
Caley Jags have conceded 10 goals in their opening three league matches, with a potentially season-ending Achilles injury suffered by summer signing Kevin McNaughton last week prompting Foran to look for fresh defensive cover.
Inverness have now given Gunning the chance to win a deal, with the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international having failed to find a club since leaving Tannadice in April.
The 25-year-old’s last game for United came in a 2-0 loss to Caley Jags earlier that month, with his final act to pick up the ball during play in order to receive treatment on a knee injury.
Gunning parted company with the club just days later, ending his second spell at the club, having had spells with Birmingham City and Oldham Athletic following his initial departure from the Arabs in 2014.
The Dublin-born player came through the youth ranks with Blackburn Rovers, where he played alongside current Caley Jags midfielder Aaron Doran, and spent time out on loan with Tranmere Rovers, Rotherham United, Bury and Motherwell prior to first joining United in 2011.
Caley Thistle midfielder Billy King, who is on loan from Hearts, has been named in Ricky Sbragia’s Scotland under-21 squad for next month’s European Championship qualifying double header against Macedonia and Ukraine.
