Peterhead ready to move up the table after sluggish start

Peterhead manager Jim McInally is hopeful his side can move off the bottom of the table with a positive result against full-time Airdrieonians this evening.

The Balmoor side have made a surprisingly sluggish start to the League One season, taking only five points from their first eight matches.

McInally’s men sit a point behind second bottom Stenhousemuir ahead of today’s trip to the Excelsior Stadium with the match shown live on BBC Alba (kick-off 5.15pm).

The Peterhead manager said: “I’m sure the players will enjoy the fact that the game is being televised.

“It does give it an extra edge.

“Despite our position in the league, I don’t think there has been anything wrong with our performances in recent games, we just haven’t been getting the results.

“If we can replicate how we have played in our last two games then I would feel confident of getting the win.

“We can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot in the way we have been doing with so many individual errors.

“I’m looking for the same level of performance.

“If we cut out the mistakes then we will be fine.”

Airdrie go into the match on the back of a 2-1 win at title chasing Alloa, a result which allowed Brechin to move top of the table thanks to a 1-0 victory at Stranraer.

McInally said: “I believe the game against Alloa was a bit of a smash and grab result.

“But it will have given them a lot of confidence.

“The worry is Airdrie are a full-time team.

“Over the last two weeks they will have trained just about every day, whereas I have only seen my players a couple of times.

“That does give them an edge.”

Peterhead welcome back defender Scott Ross to the squad following groin and thigh injuries.

McInally added: “That is a boost for us. We just need to get him up to speed in terms of fitness but it is great to have him back available.”
