Caley Thistle manager John Robertson feels today’s Championship encounter against Morton at Cappielow presents his side with an ideal opportunity to put themselves in the mix for a promotion play-off place.
Inverness are three points adrift of today’s opponents, and six behind fourth-placed Livingston.
Robertson reckons the head-to-head encounters will be key in determining who remains in the hunt for promotion and he is determined to take advantage in Greenock today.
Robertson said: “Every game is important but when we’re playing somebody around about us, like we did last week against Dumbarton when the opportunity was there to leapfrog them, this week we could draw level on points with Morton who have a decent goal difference.
“It has shown – Dunfermline lost a game last week and now them and Morton are within striking distance, while Queen of the South are not far beyond them. These are the big ones because if we can win them, it is a proverbial six-pointer that gets us right up there.
“We’ve got two away games now before the start of the new year and we want to get as many point from them as we can so we can hang in there, in touch with the promotion play-off spots.”
Robertson is pleased with the slow but steady progress his side is making in edging up the table, and he added: “We spoke before the Falkirk game in October about how we needed about five snookers, but we have slowly clawed our way back into it.
“We knew if we started to win and gradually pegged the points difference back we could close the gap. After seven or eight games we were 15 or 16 points behind but we’ve now closed that gap to five from the play-offs. Our initial aim is to continue to claw that back and get ourselves into the last quarter, hopefully within striking distance of still being involved in the Championship race.”
