Peterhead must win them all in title run-in

Peterhead forward Russell McLean reckons it is vital the Blue Toon end their winless streak today if they are to hold any hope of catching League 2 front-runners Montrose.

Peterhead head for Cowdenbeath today five points behind the Gable Endies with a game in hand, but have gone four games without a victory.

With only 11 games to go this season, McLean feels there is little margin for error if the Balmoor men are to win promotion as champions.

He said: “I feel every game between now and the end of the season is a must-win. Montrose have a way of grinding out wins, whether that is seeing out 1-0 victories or coming from behind. They always seem to find a way to win.

“They are set up a certain way and it works and we don’t expect them to drop many points from now until the end of the season.

“We need to get back to what we were doing before February.

“One win will propel us forward.

“If we had won at Annan on Tuesday I think the confidence would have returned and we would have kicked on from there. It is really important we get back to winning ways against Cowdenbeath.”

McLean, the former East Kilbride attacker, netted a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 3-3 draw at Annan after coming off the bench to replace the injured Rory McAllister.

McAllister is expected to be sidelined for a month with ankle ligament damage but McLean is ready to lead the line.

He added: “On a personal level it was great to score a hat-trick but it was disappointing the game ended as a draw because it t felt more like a defeat.

“When Jim McInally signed me he said he was wanting to bring in someone who could take the pressure off Rory when it came to scoring goals.

“Although he has scored the majority of our goals there has been a decent return from the rest of the team.

“Even the defenders have been chipping in with goals.

“If Rory is out for a while then I might be the one who is leading the line and if that’s the case I’ll certainly be doing my best for the team.”
