Caley Thistle cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory over bottom side Brechin City in their Championship encounter at Caledonian Stadium.
A double from midfielder Joe Chalmers and goals from Coll Donaldson and George Oakley gave John Robertson’s men a comfortable victory over the Angus outfit, on a night on which they were rarely troubled.
The result does not reduce the gap between Inverness and the play-off positions, with the Highlanders continuing to trail Dundee United and Dunfermline by 11 points, however they have three games in hand over the Pars.
Caley Thistle made four changes from the side that drew 2-2 with St Mirren on Saturday, with Joe Chalmers, Riccardo Calder, Collin Seedorf and Connor Bell drafted in for Carl Tremarco, Gary Warren, Nathan Austin and Aaron Doran who dropped to the bench.
Inverness made a decent start, and were worthy of their lead when it arrived on 12 minutes. Liam Polworth’s delivery from the right could not be turned home by George Oakley, with the ball falling for Chalmers to slot home.
Caley Jags doubled their lead on 22 minutes when Chalmers’ free kick picked out Donaldson, who provided a simple finish past City goalkeeper Graeme Smith from close range.
Inverness grabbed a third on 58 minutes when a neat breakaway in midfield saw Polworth release Chalmers, who tucked home his second goal with a fine cushioned finish from 16 yards.
An excellent move brought Inverness’ fourth goal eight minutes later, as Polworth released Bell to provide a square ball for Oakley to hammer into the empty net, rounding off the scoring.
