Caley Thistle kept their promotion play-off charge going with Iain Vigurs’ goal securing a 1-0 victory at Dumbarton in the Championship.
Neither side was able to find a breakthrough in the first half, however there was no stopping Vigurs on 56 minutes when his powerful strike gave the Highlanders a deserved lead.
John Robertson’s men held on to claim a fifth straight victory, moving them above Morton on goal difference into fifth, with Caley Jags able to make sure of a play-off spot with three victories starting with Saturday’s game against Dunfermline, who occupy fourth-place.
Caley Jags made just one change from the side that triumphed 5-1 against the Sons on Saturday, with Coll Donaldson returning from suspension in place of Collin Seedorf.
The Highlanders made a bright start, with Nathan Austin shooting low at Scott Gallacher and Iain Vigurs sidefooting over in the early stages, however the visitors survived a let-off on 10 minutes when Tom Walsh nodded over from close-range after meeting Dimitris Froxylias’ delivery.
Inverness were forced to make a change after just 25 minutes when skipper Gary Warren limped off, with Seedorf brought on to replace him.
Inverness continued to threaten however, with a neat lay-off from George Oakley teeing up Vigurs for a chance just after the half-hour mark, with his shot going inches past the right-hand post. Although Caley Jags were dominant in the remainder of the first half, they were unable to find a path to goal.
Aaron Doran spurned an excellent chance to break the deadlock four minutes after the interval when he lashed over after being played through by Polworth.
Inverness were not to be denied on 56 minutes however, when goalkeeper Gallacher’s punch landed with Vigurs, who showed excellent composure to cushion the ball before drilling it into the far corner for a deserved breakthrough, with Robertson’s men holding on to claim the points.
