It has been a season to forget for Ross County but captain Andrew Davies remains hopeful the Staggies can end it on a high by retaining their Premiership status.
County need to defeat St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park today, and hope Partick Thistle do not win against Dundee, in order to secure a place in the relegation play-offs.
The Dingwall men have endured a tough campaign, winning just six league matches, with co-bosses Stuart Kettlewell and Steven Ferguson the third management team of the season following the departures of Jim McIntyre and Owen Coyle.
English defender Davies is calling for one final push from his side at Perth today, and he said: “Frustration is definitely the word – it has been a frustrating season all the way through.
“The consistency throughout the squad, individually and collectively, just hasn’t been good enough. It’s really disappointing.
“It has been a long season. We’ve got to stick to the game, and then after the game things will be said – I think there’s a lot to be said.
“But there’s no time for that, we will try to get the result and go from there.
“Fingers crossed we can go and win that game. We know what needs to be done.
“I’m sure the players know how important it is for the people around the football club to stay in this league.
“Hopefully everyone is feeling like that. We are still in with a fight, we are staying positive, and we will see what happens.”
Although County are relying on a favour from Dundee, Davies insists he will blank out any thoughts about what is happening at Dens Park, adding: “This is the first time I have been in this situation, but it’s all about experience. Nothing changes, we’ve just got to go and try to win the game, stay positive.
“If we play and we are firing, I think we can get a result.
“The other game won’t interest me, it’s just all about trying to keep the boys focused.
“We need to be as positive as we can. At half time, if we are winning, we just have to make sure we win the game.”
Saints are safe from the threat of relegation, but looking to pip Motherwell to seventh place, and Davies does not expect Tommy Wright’s side to take their eye off the ball.
He added: “As professional footballers, they will want to win the game. They will want to finish on a high before the summer.
“They will be coming to try and beat us, but you want them like that, you want that attitude.
“You don’t want to be going into the game thinking they will just roll over, because then you probably don’t approach it right.
“It’s going to be a tough game, it always is going there. But it’s one I think we can win.
“When the odds are stacked against you, you’ve got nothing to lose – you just go out there.
“When we perform really well – it obviously hasn’t been enough this year, we’ve not had enough consistency – but if we actually turn up we will get a result. I’m confident of that.
“If we do, I am confident we will stay in this league after that.”
