The Robertson clan was in full effect last weekend as brothers Aaron, Jordan and Cameron all played in Aberdeen Grammar’s 46-33 win at Kelso.
Aaron, the senior member of the family at 30, was joined by prop Jordan, 23, and 21-year-old lock Cameron in securing a rare win in the Borders and the elder Robertson sibling hopes to repeat the feat when his club makes another long trip south this weekend to face Selkirk.
He said: “Going to the Borders is never an easy task and I’ve never been in a winning Grammar side at Selkirk. I’ve won there with the twos but never with the first team.
“Having said that, I hadn’t won at Kelso either until last weekend so it would be nice to go there and make it a double. I don’t know who came up with a fixture list that sends us to the Borders two weekends in a row but – having played down there in some pretty horrendous conditions in the past – I suppose I should be grateful we’re getting the chance to go there before the weather turns and the pitches become heavy.”
Aaron is the experienced campaigner of the bunch in terms of first-team experience but when it comes to playing rugby he insists he is on a par with his younger brothers.
The lock said: “There’s actually four Robertson brothers but one decided not take up rugby while I came to the sport late, at the age of 22.
“I lived away from Aberdeen for a while when I was at university and I had a friend from Tonga who convinced me to try touch rugby.
“When I moved back home I joined Aberdeen Wanderers for a season before moving to Grammar and I’m in my eighth season now.
“Jordan and Cameron were teenagers when I joined the club and they’ve come through the youth section at the club to reach the first team.
“When I see them playing in the same team as me I feel old.”
As one of the senior long-serving players at Rubislaw Aaron believes the positive mood at the club has made Rubislaw a buoyant place to be.
He said: “I feel as if I’ve seen it all in my time here and there’s been a few ups and downs, but there is a really positive buzz about the place these days and the last year or two has been really promising for the club.
“We’ve got a good coaching setup, a great bunch of players and a positive committee behind the scenes. It feels as if we’re really making progress.”
