Fans have lined the streets as north-east Commonwealth champions Hannah Miley and Viorel Etko returned home enjoyed a homecoming parade.
The swimming and wrestling champions were the guests of honour at the event in Inverurie on Saturday, where scores of people gathered to congratulate them.
Gold medalist Hannah, who still trains in her hometown of Inverurie, and Viorel – who runs a gym in the town but lives in Oldmeldrum – were dressed in Team Scotland tracksuits as they were led from the Garioch Sports Centre into the heart of the town by a piper.
As one stage Hannah – who celebrated her 25th birthday on Friday with a meet and greet for fans in Aberdeen – appeared emotional as First Minister and Aberdeenshire East MSP Alex Salmond shook Viorel’s hand.
Viorel claimed Scotland’s first Commonwealth Games wrestling medal since 1994 when he secured bronze with a dominating performance against Malta’s Adam Vella.
He arrived in London from Moldova in 1998 as an asylum seeker, moved to Glasgow in 2002 and now runs a gym at Inverurie with his wife, former Scottish Commonwealth gymnast Laura Davies.
He told the crowds on Saturday: “Thank you to everyone who came out to show their support.”
The homecoming celebration was the idea of business organisation Inverurie4U.
Cheryl Rogerson, owner of Vanity Collections clothing store in West High Street, who helped organise the event, said: “It was fantastic and overwhelming to see such support from the town to our athletes. It was so heartwarming to watch Hannah and Vio receive so much love.
“The place was buzzing and the atmosphere was electric – we are one extremely proud town.”
