Two north-east men were part of the Scottish team which has just taken Tug of War by storm at the World Championships in the Netherlands.
Michael Falconer, 44, and Rhys Anderson, 35, from Braemar and Edzell, celebrated the Scots’ success as they became kings of the world in three different categories at 600kg, 640kg and 680kg during a frenzied competition in Volendam.
The outcome demonstrated the strength of the Caledonian contingent in a sport which doesn’t often hit the headlines, yet is one in which Scotland has pulled way beyond its weight in recent years.
As Gary Gillespie, the secretary of the Scottish Tug of War Association, said: “We have an outstanding record at world level and the squad did fantastically well over the weekend.
“Michael and Rhys have both been involved in Tug of War for many years. They started out as part of Young Farmers teams and have just carried on the sport until now.
“We, as a Scotland squad, have been more successful in the last 20 years than any other team and have now become the 600kg World Champions for the sixth consecutive time.”
