Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes may try to extend loan forward Simon Church’s stay at Pittodrie beyond the end of the season.

The Wales international will return to MK Dons at the end of the campaign when his loan deal expires.

Church has one year left on his contract with the relegation-threatened Champion-ship team, who are third bottom with eight matches remaining.

The 27-year-old has scored four goals in eight appearances for the Dons and McInnes has been delighted with his contribution.

He said: “I thought Simon would score goals. We wanted an added threat to play alongside Adam Rooney and bring more goals to the team.

Dons boss Derek McInnes has praised Simon Church for his impact at Pittodrie.
Dons boss Derek McInnes has praised Simon Church for his impact at Pittodrie.

“We said he would enjoy it here and he would get opportunities to score goals playing in our team. That has been the case.

“There have been no conversations about staying but I always want players who come here to want to hang about a bit longer.

“I wouldn’t rule it out but it’s not something that has been discussed.”

Rooney is still out injured, adding to the pressure on Church to score the goals to keep Aberdeen in contention for the Premiership title and McInnes added: “We felt he was similar to Rooney, but different enough that the two of them could play together in the same team.

“Not having Adam over the past month or so because of injury has highlighted the importance of having Simon.

“He has brought a similar goal return to what Rooney has brought us in more than 100 games now.

“It’s important we have that threat – someone who goes on the pitch expecting to score rather than hoping to score.

“Simon has been in and about the Wales team. When he was not featuring for MK Dons at the bottom part of the Championship, he was not getting the same opportunities.

“He saw this move as one where he could get a bit of profile from scoring.

“I’m sure that’s what Chris Coleman is looking at – front players who are contributing and scoring goals.”

The Dons return to action against Hamilton Accies at lunchtime tomorrow. McInnes’ side were held to a 1-1 draw when the sides last met at New Douglas Park in November and the Aberdeen manager expects another difficult match.

He added: “Any team always gets a competitive game against Hamilton.

“Points are so crucial for so many teams at this stage of the season. I’m sure Hamilton will demonstrate that, as will we.”
