Derek McInnes aiming for hat-trick of wins over Celtic

Derek McInnes' Aberdeen take on Ronny Deila's Celtic this afternoon

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes wants to put the Celtic title celebrations on hold for a little longer by beating the Hoops for a third time this season.

Alex Smith was the last Dons manager to guide the Reds to three league wins against Celtic in the same season during the 1990-91 campaign.

The Dons triumphed 2-1 in both Pittodrie meetings with Ronny Deila’s men this season, although they were beaten 3-1 at Parkhead in October.

Celtic have all but wrapped up a fifth consecutive title after moving nine points clear of Aberdeen with victory at Hearts last weekend.

The Hoops have a vastly superior goal difference to the Dons meaning they can’t be caught but require a point this weekend to be officially declared champions.

McInnes is disappointed his Reds only have pride to play for but insists they will go all out for a win this Sunday lunchtime.

The Aberdeen manager said: “I’m not really too bothered about spoiling the party. I just want to see us win the game.

“We wanted this game to be more significant. As it stands, it is not going to be what we wanted it to be. But it is still a game that we want to go on and show our credentials.”

The Dons manager has hinted he will give some of the younger members the chance to play at Celtic Park.

Connor McLennan and Michael Rose were given a taste of first-team football in the 3-0 defeat by St Johnstone a fortnight ago, while Scott Wright came on as a late substitute in the 4-1 victory against Motherwell last weekend.

Adam Rooney (thigh) and Simon Church (ankle) are injury doubts for the Celtic match, while Peter Pawlett will not feature again this season because of a broken arm.

Celtic will be keen to wrap up the title with a victory over their nearest challengers but McInnes is confident his young Dons can rise to the occasion if given a chance to play.

He added: “It is one of the most difficult places to go but it might be an opportunity to play one or two of the younger ones at some point in the game and give them that experience of playing in that kind of venue.

“We want to win the game as we have our own targets we want to achieve.”
