Scotland made a spectacular start to the under-20 rugby World Cup with a 15-10 victory against Australia at the AJ Bell stadium in Salford.
Both sides were rusty in the opening quarter before an Adam Hastings penalty finally gave Scotland a 3-0 lead.
Australia rallied with a try from lock Izack Rodda to establish a 7-3 lead at half-time.
The dismissal of Australia centre Campbell Magnay after 44 minutes was to prove crucial.
Coach John Dalziel’s men would not be overawed and tries from Glasgow Warriors player Zander Fagerson and Darcy Graham of Hawick secured a famous first victory at under-20s for the Scots against the Wallabies.
Fagerson was delighted with the win and said: “There’s a massive belief in the squad and all the players work really hard to achieve our goals.”
Dalziel added: “I am really pleased for the players as they put so much effort into winning the game.
“In terms of the performance, there will be key areas we will need to take a look at.
“We expected to do well. I know a lot of people thought we were the underdogs but there is a real belief. I’m massively happy but we only have four days to turn things around before we play England. There is a lot of work to do.
“There was a lot of space for both teams, it was hot and humid but, although Australia threw a lot at us, the character was there from all the players and I am delighted with all of them.”
