Lossiemouth’s Heather Stanning and Helen Glover successfully defended their Olympic title with a stunning performance in the women’s pairs in Rio.
The pair went into the race with a five year unbeaten record that stretched back to the 2011 World Championships in Slovenia.
Glover and Stanning led from the outset, winning in seven minutes 18.29 seconds to become the first female British rowers to retain their Olympic crown.
They quickly established a lead of more than a boat-length after 1500m and held on for the victory, despite coming under late pressure from New Zealand, who took silver, and Denmark who claimed bronze.
Stanning, 31, said: “We knew we had to make a fast start and we did that.
“It has been four years of hard work.
“It just means so much more this time. It has been more emotional.”
