A request for players to wear armbands featuring poppies during the Scotland v England match on Remembrance Day has been denied.
Scotland is set to face England in a World Cup qualifier on November 11 – and had made the request, alongside Wales who play Serbia on November 12 – to mark Armistice Day.
BBC are now reporting that Fifa has denied the request, quoting SFA chief Stewart Regan as saying Fifa are “sticking to the letter of the law”.
The FAs still hope to change Fifa’s mind. If they do, they will be repeating a precedent set in 2011 and would be a compromise on FIFA’s usual ban on any commercial, political or religious messages on shirts.
They also want to know if they flout the rules, what potential punishment could they expect.
