The use of video replays for referees is an issue many have campaigned for but I worry if supporters have the patience for it.
Video assistant referees, to give them their proper name, are being used in the Club World Cup in Japan.
They will be able to advise the on-field official of errors in match-changing situations. The official will then be able to review the footage on a pitchside monitor.
The match-changing situations are goals, penalty decisions, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
Marco van Basten is the man behind this at Fifa and he has stressed the final decision will still rest with the on-field referee.
It all sounds wonderful, but what if the game is not one in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A or La Liga?
What if the footage is from one angle, taken from the back of the stand or from a single camera on a gantry?
It will only lead to more uncertainty, and extra stress for the officials who have had a hard enough job as it is.
I can picture a horde of players racing to the half-way line to look at the monitor before the referee gets there and if the footage is inconclusive then the poor official is going to be put under even more pressure.
I’ve seen television officials used in sports such as rugby but that is a stop-start game.
Football is a dynamic sport.
Ask yourself this. Would you be happy to sit and wait for a goal to be given or for a referee to decide if it’s a penalty? More importantly, will you accept the decision without having seen it for yourself?
