Former Aberdeen midfielder Stephen Glass has been named new head coach of Atlanta United 2.
Glass steps up from being academy head coach to replace Stephen Donnelly with the USL franchise.
Atlanta’s second team play in the second tier of US soccer, with the first team winning the MLS Cup play-offs last season. Former Ajax and Barcelona defender Frank de Boer – ex-manager of Ajax, Inter Milan and Crystal Palace – was recently named the first team’s new boss.
Carlos Bocanegra, who played for Rangers and Fulham, is the franchise’s vice-president and technical director and believes Glass is a perfect fit for the role.
He said: “Coming from our academy, Stephen understands the club’s philosophy and is a natural fit for Atlanta United 2.
“He is someone who embodies the club’s core values and recognises what it takes to be an Atlanta United player.”
Glass played for the Dons between 1994 and 1998, before moving to the Premier League with Newcastle. He subsequently turned out for Watford, Hibernian and Dunfermline Athletic, before finishing his career in Carolina. He joined Atlanta from Carolina Rapids in August last year.
