Aberdeen miss out on Scottish Youth Cup final with 3-1 defeat to Rangers

Aberdeen fell short in their bid to reach the Scottish Youth Cup final as they were beaten 3-1 by Rangers.

Connor Barron had put the home side in front at Cove’s Balmoral Stadium but Ciaran Dickson and Joshua McPake had Rangers in front at the interval.

Nathan Young-Coombes put the Gers further in front on 72 minutes and they will await the winners of the second semi-final, between Celtic and Queen’s Park on March 3, in the final.

Barron got Aberdeen off to the perfect start after just five minutes, meeting Kevin Hanratty’s cutback on the penalty spot with a composed finish.

Rangers were level before 10-minute mark as Dickson reacted quickest after McPake’s effort was blocked.

After Archie Mair had denied McPake and Dapo Mebude in the first half, the former held off the attentions of Luke Turner to slide across Mair into the far corner.

A swift counter-attack from the young Dons eight minutes into the second period gave them a chance to level, with Lloyd Robertson and Ethan Ross combining. Ross played in Kevin Hanratty in the left side of the area but his shot went into the side netting.

Scotland youth international Mair kept Aberdeen in the game with a great one-handed save to prevent McPake getting his second mid-way through the second period.

Substitute Young-Coombes netted a well-taken third with 17 minutes to go, latching on to Mebude’s through and lifting the ball over the on-rushing Mair.
