Aberdeen emerged from the first half of their Glasgow double-header with a creditable 0-0 draw against Celtic.

There was little between the two sides, who have been the best two sides in Scotland over the last four years but could not be separated.

It was their first point against Celtic this season and they return to Glasgow on Tuesday night, ready for the replay of their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie with Rangers.

James Wilson was the only change for the Dons from the 1-1 draw with Rangers, as Gary Mackay-Steven failed to shake off an ankle knock in time to start.

Celtic dominated possession in the opening stages without forcing Joe Lewis into a meaningful save, with the only worrying moment coming when Oliver Burke charged down a clearance from the Dons goalkeeper that went out for a goal kick.

Corners were proving their only real outlet, with Dedryck Boyata directing a header over the top at the back post, falling as he tried to meet Ewan Henderson’s centre.

Aberdeen were content to play on the counter-attack but were struggling to break on the league champions, with passes going astray or wrong avenues taken when they had opportunities to get forward.

Kristoffer Ajer finally delivered a shot at goal, as he was allowed to roam forward from the back and strike before he reached the box, with Lewis turning it wide.

Norwegian defender Ajer had a goal disallowed just before the interval, as he was flagged offside after heading in Henderson’s free-kick.

Henderson and Scott Sinclair were hauled off at half-time for Celtic, with Mikey Johnston and Odsonne Edouard in their place, while Wilson was hooked for Aberdeen for teenager Dean Campbell.

Aberdeen’s first shot on target came from Dominic Ball six minutes into the second half, after he picked up the baton from Greg Stewart, manouvred space for himself and had a low strike kicked away by Scott Bain.

Edouard threatened first for Celtic in the second half as he peeled away from Scott McKenna, however Lewis was out quickly to block.

Sam Cosgrove angled a cross-shot across goal with 14 minutes to go looking for Stewart at the back post, however Jeremy Toljan intervened to turn it behind for a corner.

Johnston had a pair of chances in the closing stages, clipping one across the face of goal and the other wide, as Aberdeen held on for a creditable point.
