Aberdeen pay for missed chances as Celtic clinch Scottish Premiership title at Pittodrie

Celtic's Mikael Lustig scores to make it 1-0.

Mikael Lustig, Jozo Simunovic and Odsonne Edouard were on target as Celtic secured an eighth consecutive Scottish Premiership title with a 3-0 win against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Dons attacker James Wilson had passed up two glorious chances before Mikael Lustig headed home the opening goal five minutes before the interval.

The Hoops doubled their advantage eight minutes into the second half when Simunovic nodded home a Callum McGregor corner.

Celtic arrived at Pittodrie knowing a point would be enough to secure an eighth successive league title but interim boss Neil Lennon said his side was determined to seal the championship in style.

Aside from the motivation of trying to prevent another team partying on their own pitch, Aberdeen had their own objectives to focus on as they looked to edge closer to a European spot.

Derek McInnes’ Dons had not beaten the Hoops this season and suffered a painful 3-0 defeat in last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden, finishing the match with only nine men after Dom Ball and Lewis Ferguson saw red.

Derek McInnes was also sent to the stand at the Hampden semi-final for making a gesture towards the Celtic support. He was back in the stand for this contest after receiving a one-match touchline ban at Thursday’s Scottish FA disciplinary hearing.

The Dons made three changes from the side that went down 2-0 against Rangers last Sunday with Shay Logan, making his first start since February, Mikey Devlin and Greg Stewart replacing Connor McLennan, Stephen Gleeson and the suspended Andy Considine.

Aberdeen’s very inexperienced bench included Jack Mackenzie, Miko Virtanen, Ethan Ross and David Dangana.

Celtic made two alterations with Kieran Tierney and Timo Weah stepping in for Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Sinclair.

The visitors enjoyed the bulk of possession in the early stages but it was Aberdeen who should have taken the lead after 17 minutes when Stewart’s cross found Wilson unmarked but the on-loan Manchester United forward’s downward volley hit the crossbar on its way over.

There was a reprieve for the Dons at the other end five minutes later when Odsonne Edouard raced clear on goal but could find no way past Joe Lewis.

Aberdeen, however, were growing in confidence and passed up another golden opportunity to break the deadlock after 33 minutes.

Scott McKenna sparked the attack with a long-bursting run forward and inviting cross for Sam Cosgrove. His low drive was blocked by Scott Bain but there looked only one outcome when the loose ball fell to Wilson, only for the Dons forward to hit the wrong side of the post with the goal gaping.

The Dons were made to pay for their profligacy five minutes before the break when Callum McGregor crossed for Lustig to head home.

Wilson had another chance in the opening moments of the second half but again he failed to find the target from a Stevie May cross before Lewis denied Edouard at the other end.

But it was the visitors who doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Simunovic headed home from a McGregor corner.

Cosgrove was booked for a late challenge on Celtic substitute Jonny Hayes before Stewart fired over as the Dons pushed for a way back into the match.

The Hoops sealed the victory in the 86th minute when Tom Rogic rolled the ball into the path of Edouard who fired beyond Lewis.
