Graeme Mathieson hopes to fulfil Cove Rangers dream of playing in the SPFL

Cove Rangers co-manager Graeme Mathieson hopes to finally fulfil his ambition of guiding the club into the SPFL.

But Mathieson admits he will have mixed feelings about leaving the Highland League, should Cove overcome Berwick Rangers over two legs.

The Aberdeen side host Berwick at Balmoral Stadium this afternoon.

Mathieson said: “I’ve been at Cove for the last 10 years and during that decade the main topic of conversation has always been our big ambition to get into the SPFL one day.

“With the new stadium and the infrastructure, everything is now in place for us to make that move. This will be our third attempt so hopefully it is third time lucky.

“We’re now just two games away from fulfilling our dream. To be honest, I think that in some ways we have outgrown the Highland League, a league which has improved year-on-year during my 10-year involvement.

“But with the facilities we now have at Balmoral Stadium and the strength of our squad, we really are gearing up to playing SPFL football.”

Mathieson added: “I would definitely miss being involved in the Highland League.
“It is a very friendly and fantastically competitive league.

“Better players and managers have come in over the decade I’ve been involved with Cove and everybody’s certainly more tactically savvy.

“If we go up, I really will miss those all-day trips to the likes of Fort William in the west and Wick in the far north.

“You just couldn’t get a more friendly club than Wick. After the game and before the long trek home you would sit down with their management team, have a beer, enjoy soup and sandwiches and talk about the great game of football. I really would miss days like that.”
