Cove Rangers ace striker Mitchel Megginson is battling to be fit for today’s crunch pyramid play-off final second leg against Berwick Rangers at Shielfield Park.

The former Aberdeen, Dumbarton and Alloa Athletic player, who picked up a groin strain in last week’s 4-0 first leg triumph at Balmoral Stadium, faces a pre-match fitness-test to see if he is fit enough to help his team-mates in what could be a historic occasion, and in so doing go in search of his 50th goal of the season.

Megginson said: “I haven’t trained this week at all just to give the injury as much time as possible to heal.

“I take it that it will be almost a last-minute decision as to whether I play tomorrow or not, it is still causing me a little bit of a problem but I will be trying everything I know to make sure that I’m playing.

“I think it will all come down to a late fitness-test and hopefully the injury improves overnight so that I manage to get through it.

“I desperately want to be involved at Berwick tomorrow so that we can hopefully get the result we need to gain promotion not League 2, with the added incentive that if I were to score a goal then I would reach 50 for the second year in a row.”

Megginson is also hoping that Cove co-manager, John Sheran, who suffered a heart-attack last month, might be at the game, and added: “We all hope that John is able to be at Berwick tomorrow to see if we can create history by becoming the first team from the Highland League through the pyramid, I’m sure John will be trying everything he can to get down, and it would be a great boost for ourselves to see him in the stands.”
