Former Inter Milan youngster Ben Greenhalgh has been released by Caley Thistle.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder started only once for Inverness last season before ending the campaign on loan at Stenhousemuir.

Greenhalgh won a six month contract with Inter Milan after appearing on television show Football’s Next Star and impressed the Italian giants enough to earn a one-year extension. But after 18 months in Italy he returned to English football with Welling United in 2011.

Spells at Ebbsfleet United, Maidstone United and Concord Rangers were to follow before Greenhalgh joined Caley Thistle last summer.

However, the left-sided player was unable to force his way into the first team under former manager Terry Butcher or his successor John Hughes.

Hughes said: “We have let him go so he can find a club. He has got talent and found himself sitting on the bench here, so we felt to further his career, we needed to let him go.

“He wanted first-team football that I couldn’t give him. He goes with our best wishes.”

Caley Thistle will start their 2014-15 campaign against the Scottish Premiership’s two newly promoted teams.

Inverness will travel to Hamilton on the opening day of the season on August 9 before hosting Dundee at Caledonian Stadium on August 13.

The Inverness faithful will hope to see their side make a positive start to the campaign before tougher tests against Motherwell and Celtic later in the month but Hughes says it willl not be easy against the Scottish Premiership new boys.

Hughes said: “It will be strange not having Hibernian and Hearts in our league any more but Hamilton and Dundee have earned the right to be here and they will be out to show that.

“We can’t wait to get started. Starting at Hamilton is one to look forward to. I know of few of their players and they are a really good side so we’ll not be taking them for granted.

“The game will be on the artificial surface, which will be something new, but we’ll be ready for that. We have a lot of work to do before then but when the fixtures come out all the players, like me, are excited by the challenge that lies ahead.”
