Groningen were founded in 1971 and are nicknamed the Pride of the North in the Netherlands. They finished seventh in the Dutch Premier Division last season.
They are in European football for the first time in seven years after beating AZ Alkmaar in the play-offs to qualify for the Europa League last season following an impressive 10 game unbeaten run at the end of the campaign.
The club produced the famous Koeman brothers, Ronald and Erwin, and play their home matches at the 22,000-capacity Euroborg Stadium.
The stadium has a reputation in the Netherlands as one of the most atmospheric grounds in the country.
Playing in green and white, Groningen are managed by Erwin van de Looi, who was promoted from the role of assistant manager after Robert Maaskant left the club in March 2013.
