With Aberdeen FC playing in Groningen tomorrow for their Europa League qualifier, we thought we’d look back at the Dons’ proudest moment; the famous European Cup Winners’ Cup win against Real Madrid in 1983.

11 May 1983 was the 23rd instalment of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in which the Dons bought home the title.

Ahead of the final game, the Dons weren’t envisioned as winners. It was their first time qualifying and Real Madrid had far more experience in high pressured matches having played Chelsea during 1971 Cup final.

Proud Dons supporters however made their way to Sweden to make up some of the 17,804 football fans that flooded Ullevi stadium.

At 90 minutes, the game was tied at 1-1 before going into extra time with Aberdeen’s John Hewitt scoring in the 112th minute.
